What to communicate?

Does your idea impact the general public?

Follow our 5 step guide:

  • What is the idea?
  • Who does it help/impact? This is your audience
  • When can it be implemented?
  • Where can it be implemented?
  • How can it help/impact them?

Consolidate/Condense your idea…

  • Find a way to express your idea in 1 or 2 paragraphs
  • Or, alternatively, a 1-2 minute speech or less

Transition your (now-) condensed idea into an argument

  • Your argument should focus on the who, what, when, why, and how from before
  • Focus on the short term, but…
  • If your idea is a long term one, what current problem can it address/solve? Is there one?

How does your idea make the world a better place?

This is where scientists should use their intuition and foresight that politicians and the general public don't typically have. (i.e. What's the long term payoff?)

  1. What are the long term ambitions of the science you're pursuing?
  2. If addressing a current problem: how can solving this problem have long term positive effects?
  3. If addressing a long term problem: how is the solution within reach to people today?

Finally, how does your idea relate to money?

Does your idea save $ today?

  1. Yes- need to convince politicians to not take $ from lobbyists and save the public $
  2. No- then why is it a better solution?
    1. Are there other issues addressed, like sustainability or equity
    2. If addressing a long term problem- when can your idea become financially viable, if at all?
